Tacoma
Narrows - Changes?
|
January 30th 2004 - UAS
and staff met with representatives of the Washington Department of
Transportation (DOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the
Washington State Historical Preservation Officer (SHPO), and the Tacoma
Narrows Contractors (TNC) in Olympia on December 17, 2004. Also in
attendance was the assistant to Representative Patricia Lantz, Ms.
Rashi Gupta.
The purpose of the meeting was to have all agencies present to discuss
the scope of adverse impact upon Galloping Gerdie, a historical bridge
submerged in the Tacoma Narrows. UAS expressed its concerns and offered
help to describe the national registry’s historical site. Many
agencies, but not all, were unaware of the boundaries of the historical
site as designated in 1991 by application and final acceptance to the
National Registry of Historic Places.
Varying opinions about the adverse effect to the site prompted the SHPO
to request a dive to determine the real consequences of the adverse
impact to the historical remains. SHPO has the final approval to any
and all mitigation plans as a result of the adverse impact. SHPO wants
to know the scope of the impact so that appropriate mitigation takes
place.
DOT hired David Evans and Associates, Inc. the week of January 19,
2004. A representative from their company contacted UAS in coordinating
arrangements for a meeting to discuss the criteria for the underwater
survey and examination of the submerged bridge.
UAS continues to meet and consult with all agencies and legislators to
help them better understand the adverse impact of the construction to
the historical remains and to promote proper mitigation programs
commensurate to the adverse affect to the historic site.
What can you do to help?
Contact your Senators and Representatives. Tell them your concerns
about the impact of the new bridge construction to old Galloping
Gertie’s remains. Ask them to investigate so that proper mitigation
will be performed for the adverse impact.
